The application of nanotechnology and nanomaterials in consumer products is pronounced and ranges from products that can be categorized among ‘Health and Fitness’, ‘Home and Garden’, ‘Automotive’, ‘Personal care products’, ‘Sporting goods’, ‘Clothing’ and ‘Cosmetics’.1  

The use of nanotechnology and nanomaterials in consumer products can hold various advantages for the producers, as well as benefits for the consumer. These include improved aesthetics, performance and functional uses.2,3   

In many cases, claims by manufacturers and retailers is the only source of information about the applications of nanotechnology in consumer products. Often the identity of nanomaterials used in consumer products is unknown. Nanosilver is the most reported nanomaterial which is used in multiple products of different types. Titanium and titanium dioxide are also used, as well as carbon, carbon black and carbon nanotubes. Other nanomaterials that are relevant to specific product categories include carbon nanotubes and bamboo charcoal in ‘Health and Fitness’ consumer products; titanium dioxide in ‘Health and Fitness’ and ‘Home and Garden’; gold in ‘Appliances’, ‘Health and Fitness’ and ‘Home and Garden’; titanium in ‘Automotive’, ‘Health and Fitness’ and ‘Home and Garden’ and phosphate in ‘Appliances’.4
