The patents and patent families (groups of patents) were identified by searching using a combination of keywords and/or the classification numbers for nanotechnology under the International Patent Classification (IPC) system i.e. B82 (or B82Y for manufactured nanomaterials). The search was made for patents registered at the USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office), EPO (European Patent Office) and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) thereby identifying USPTO, EPO and PCT patents. PCT patents are those that are protected under the Patent Co-operation Treaty (PCT), an international treaty that enables the filing of patents to protect inventions in the countries that are members of the treaty.
