Construction

Construction - Overview - About the Sector - Text

Following the definition in the NACE (Nomenclature of Economic Activities), construction sector covers construction activities for buildings and civil engineering works (e.g., motorways, streets, bridges, etc.). Construction activities embrace new work, repair, additions and alterations, the constructions of prefabricated buildings or structures as well as temporary constructions1.

Nanotechnologies within the construction industry may provide unique characteristics that can improve construction materials.  Nanomaterial application within the industry includes concrete, allowing for a lighter and stronger structural composition, as well as glass and windows, promoting better reflectivity, lower thermal transfer rate and fire resistance.

At present, the use of nanomaterials within the construction sector is still in its infancy stage but has shown potential benefits to the wider society and economy.  To promote further implementation of nanomaterials within the sector, research and monitoring is required to ensure environmental and health exposure does not cause any negative effects.
